Three sets of triplets born in one day at Woman's

khou.com staff report

HOUSTON -- Doctors scored a triple play at The Woman's Hospital of Texas Thursday when three sets of triplets were born. They brought one set of boys, one set of girls, and another set of two boys and one girl into the world. The Estrada, LaCombe, and Elmore families had been blogging online about having triplets when they learned they would all be delivering at the same hospital. They met for the first time on Friday. "We are so pleased for our new parents," said Linda Russell, CEO, The Woman's Hospital of Texas. "Last year our physicians delivered 321 sets of twins, 27 sets of triplets, 4 sets of quadruplets, and one set up quintuplets; so multiples are not new to us. But, it is unique to have three sets of triplets in a 24 hour period."

Here are the baby names and birth weights:
Estradas: Robert, 4 lbs., 14.1oz; Brian, 3 lbs., 14.8 oz; and Anthony, 3 lbs., 6.5 oz
Lacombes: Emma, 3 lbs., 11 oz.; Noah, 4 lbs., 11 oz.; and Carter, 4 lbs. 11.3 oz.
Elmores: 4 lbs., 6.6 oz.; Paige, 4 lbs, 5.5 oz.; and Kara, 4 lbs., 7.6 oz.

Hospital sees triplet births 3 times in one day

The stork was extra busy delivering triplets three times over at the Woman’s Hospital of Texas. Just after 7 a.m. Thursday, the Elmore family of Pearland doubled in size with the delivery of Reagan, Paige and Kara. Then, just after 6 p.m., Karen and Hugo Estrada of Kingwood welcomed their boys — Robert, Brian and Anthony — into the world. And right before 7 p.m., Stephanie and Justin Lacombe of Nassau Bay started their family with Emma, Noah and Carter. Hospital CEO Linda Russell called it “a very active delivery day” at a maternity ward that’s already one of the busiest in Houston. In 2008, 27 sets of triplets were born at Woman’s. “To have three in one day is something different for us,” Russell said. All the babies were delivered at 34 weeks by cesarean section, she said, and each weighed at least 3 pounds. All three families used in-vitro fertilization to conceive. “It’s kind of surreal. It’s exciting,” said Stephanie Lacombe, 37, who runs a mobile crane business with her 28-year-old husband. “It’s amazing that those three little bodies came out of my stomach.” The Estrada boys are breathing on their own and “doing very well,” said their mother, Karen Estrada. She and her husband, a contractor, were “surprised and a little bit terrified” about having triplets. Then they found out they weren’t alone on Thursday. “It’s a fun surprise,” said Karen Estrada, an accountant. “It’s a nice thing to share because it’s an overwhelming experience.”
The three mothers met while still pregnant through Space City Triplets, a support group for parents of multiples. They were aware their delivery dates were close, but they never predicted they all would give birth on the same day. “It’s overwhelming, but I’m feeling very blessed and a little anxious,” said Troy Elmore, 39, a business consultant now with four daughters, including 4-year-old Brooke. “It’s four weddings, four colleges and four cars. And that’s a lot of hugs.” All three Elmore baby girls are breathing well, he said, and his wife, Heather, 35, will be posting new pictures on their blog. In 2005, there were just 491 sets of Texas triplets and 6,118 sets born nationwide in 2006, the most recent national figures available.
